Whereas most consumers think of prescription drugs like Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis when considering erectile dysfunction remedies, an enormous industry also exists that is based on natural, herbal treatments for sexual dysfunction in men. Regardless of the branding used for the individual products which make up this category, each of them is, for the most part, based on one of six different organic substances that is known to promote circulation throughout the body.

Ashwagandha Root.

Better known by its commercial name Indian Ginseng, the Ashwagandha root has a long history in India as an aphrodisiac and dietary supplement. In addition to its reputed effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction, the root is also renowned for its ability to treat fatigue and anxiety. While studies have found a link between Ashwagandha use and semen quality, no definitive findings have been made that prove its effectiveness in treating ED.

Ginkgo biloba.

Undoubtedly the most-widely used, natural erectile dysfunction remedy in Eastern medicine, extract from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba tree has been prescribed to men suffering from impotence in Asia for thousands of years. Modern researchers have confirmed that the extract does increase blood flow throughout the body, and improve the body’s ability to combat the effects of kidney, heart, lung, and central nervous disorders caused by insufficient blood flow. Its usefulness specifically as an erectile dysfunction treatment has not been proven, but evidence does suggest that it is beneficial to many ED sufferers.

L-Arginine.

The amino acid L-Arginine has become increasingly popular as a dietary supplement in the West in recent years where it is often marketed as an erectile dysfunction treatment. The substance appears naturally in red meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products and is known to improve circulation by causing the body to create nitric oxide. Initial studies on L-Arginine’s role in treating ED have been inconclusive.

Propionyl-L-Carnitine.

A compound created by biosynthesizing the amino acids lysine and methionine, Propionyl-L-Carnitine is primarily known for the role it plays in accelerating the body’s metabolism of fatty acids, but research has also shown that it is potentially beneficial in treating male infertility and impotence. One study, in particular, was able to determine that Carnitine used in conjunction with Viagra was far more effective at treating erectile dysfunction than was either substance individually.

Yohimbine.

Popularly marketed as Yohimbe, this extract from the bark of an African tree was extremely popular as a natural erectile dysfunction remedy when it was first introduced in the West. While researchers were able to determine that the extract increases blood flow and libido, its side effects (including drastic drops in blood pressure) have led most physicians to advise against its use as a dietary supplement and treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Zinc.

Due to Zinc’s known role in healthy blood flow, many erectile dysfunction patients report that they have been successful in relieving their ED symptoms by increasing their intake of the mineral. While no claims are made that it is capable of completely eliminating erectile dysfunction, it is widely accepted that taking Zinc tablets as a dietary supplement does improve blood flow and may conversely alleviate minor cases of ED.

Do Natural ED Remedies Really Work?

Given the lack of conclusive research data supporting the effectiveness of the natural erectile dysfunction remedies discussed in this article, a natural question is “Do any of them really work?” The answer to this question would seem to be “yes, in some cases”.  With so many ED patients reporting success in treating their condition with these substances, they obviously can be beneficial for some people. On the other hand, their usefulness in treating several cases of erectile dysfunction is completely unknown.
